AI will need to find new directions and ways to expand on modern methods such as Neural networks if we are to have machines that can truly reason. As amazing as recent advances have been, it is very possible that they will hit the limits of what they can do before they reach the point of real machine cognition.
It is important for us to go outside of the boundaries of typical research and explore new ideas.
