Amazon.com Inc. has announced the intention to let users post videos to its site that will generate revenue through royalties and advertising. With this move the company is pitting itself against Youtube, the veritable leader in hosting user-generated video content, and extending the scope of its video offerings. While the company has stated that the service has been built for “professional video producers”, current requirements only require the video to be shot in HD format and the inclusion of close captioning. In extending its video capabilities, Amazon is currently battling it out on two fronts. In 2014, the company purchased Twitch, the livestreaming site for gamers and made the first cut into Youtube’s gaming audience.
