Big data system shows promise in helping cancer patients at Todai

The concept of “big data” not only saves time but it can also save lives and is quickly becoming an essential tool in the medical field, researchers at the University of Tokyo (Todai) said. They said IBM’s artificial intelligence platform Watson has been a big help in diagnosing cancer and treating cancer patients in nearly 80 percent of cases it has analyzed. “I got the impression that Watson is useful because it presents necessary information with remarkable speed and accuracy,” said Arinobu Tojo, professor of hematologic malignancy at the Advanced Clinical Research Center at the university’s Institute of Medical Science.
