BP turns to Mars rover intelligence for oil rigs

BP is preparing to use the artificial intelligence technology that helped Nasa land a rover on Mars to improve how it drills for oil. Last month, the energy company invested $20 million in Beyond Limits, a Californian start-up that adapts space technology for commercial use, and said they were now working together to pilot applications of the AI. The plans are part of an effort to embrace new technologies, which Bob Dudley, BP’s chief executive, said last week were “rewriting the rule book for E&P [exploration and production]”. Ahmed Hashmi, head of technology for BP’s E&P arm, told The Times that automation could halve the number of people on drilling rigs and make sophisticated unmanned production platforms commonplace within a decade.
