Can Neuroscientists Read Our Dreams?

In a recent TED Talk, Kellogg’s Moran Cerf explains what the latest studies in neuroscience can tell us about our own dreams. Some of these studies address the possibility of being able to read dreams. In one study, for instance, participants are asked to memorize a story before falling asleep. “When they’re sleeping, the brain replays the same story using the same neurons in the same order, sequence, and timing,” explains Cerf, a neuroscientist and assisant professor of marketing at Kellogg. Other studies offer even more tantalizing possibilities. Although scientsts remain divided on the question of why we dream, the consensus is that dreams offer our brain a way of “crafting answers to problems.” The upshot?
