Computers better than doctors at assessing lung cancer samples: Study
STANFORD, Calif., Aug. 16 (UPI) — Classifying tumors and estimating survival time for cancer patients is an inexact science, but a computer trained to judge tumor samples performed better than humans — a result that did not surprise researchers involved with the experiment. Researchers at Stanford University say the the future of determining cancer prognosis may lie in the judgement of a computer, based on speed, consistency and reliability, according to a new study published in the journal Nature Communications. Pathologists assess the severity of cancer, assigning it a grade, based on cross-sections of tumor examined with a microscope.
