Data science leader Mario Garzia resigning from University of Akron amid budget constraints

The man hired to turn the University of Akron into a data science hub will resign on Dec. 9.Mario Garzia said in his resignation letter that he is leaving the university due to “constraints that might impact” his ability to build the Center for Data Science, Analytics and Information Technology.The university is facing budget pressure because it is projecting enrollment to drop by 9% this fall, according to chief communications officer Wayne Hill.Garzia, a former Microsoft executive, was recruited by former university president Scott Scarborough to lead the center.
