Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX — and an outspoken critic of the potential dangers of of artificial intelligence, or AI — has joined with other technology experts to form OpenAI, a not-for-profit artificial intelligence research company. The goal of the group “is to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return,” according to a statement on its website. “The founders hope to grow AI into a leading, open-sourced research institution that deploys new technologies in a way that is safe for humanity.
