Elon Musk Warns US Leaders That Artificial Intelligence Is ‘the Scariest Problem’

In a recent meeting with U.S. governors at the bipartisan National Governors Association in Rhode Island, Tesla CEO Elon Musk—who was on the docket to speak about alternative energy, Tesla, and space travel—told the state executives that artificial intelligence (A.I.), a subject about which Musk would apparently know a great deal, poses an “existential threat” to human civilization. “A.I. is a fundamental existential risk for human civilization, and I don’t think people fully appreciate that,” the 46-year-old entrepreneur told the audience, going on to say that of all the advanced technology he has at his fingertips, A.I. is “the scariest problem.” The solution? Musk called on the government to focus on proactive intervention, however “irksome” it is, before it’s too late. “I think people should be really concerned about it…I keep sounding the alarm bell.” This is indeed not the first time Musk has voiced his grave concerns on the topic.
