Ex-Amazon Software Engineer Creates AI Music-Playing Program AutoHarp

Dave Segal After 13 years at Amazon, including a stint doing cloud computing, software engineer and musician Paul Mariz left in 2012 and shortly thereafter started working on a project called AutoHarp. It’s a computer program that composes and plays music via MIDI; he thinks it will be the opposite of DARPA’s machine learning bots—MUSICA—that are learning to play jazz in the service of the military strategy. Mariz (“pronounced like the planet, but there’s an extra syllable”) sees AutoHarp as ultimately a boon to humanity.
