Google partners with Movidius to bring ‘deep learning’ to Android smartphones

Tech giant Google has revealed in a Wednesday announcement that it has worked out a new partnership with chip-making startup Movidius, to bring ‘deep learning’ – a branch of machine learning – to smartphones powered by Android operating system. Movidius is a chip startup which specializes in machine vision. Google and Movidius have already worked together on the Project Tango computer-vision platform. The new partnership will enable Google to license Movidius’ low-power processors which it calls vision processing units (or VPUs). Announcing the partnership, Google’s machine learning group said that Google will use Movidius’ latest flagship processor — the extremely power-efficient MA2450 chip — as well as the startup’s software development environment, to equip Android smartphones with ‘deep learning’ capabilities.
