Sir, Luciano Floridi brings common sense to the debate about artificial intelligence’s threat to humans (“Humans have nothing to fear from intelligent machines”, January 26). However, the main argument should not be whether machines can achieve artificial intelligence. They may some day, and the fact that they are far from it for the moment is no proof that anxieties are “scientifically unjustified”. We have a hard time understanding what human or animal intelligence is, and are notoriously weak in predicting how technology develops; we must assume therefore that artificial intelligence is a distinct possibility some time in the future.
