Japan needs original game plan for AI research
TOKYO — Left in the dust by the U.S. and Europe, Japanese artificial intelligence research has to find a unique angle to overcome mounting challenges. So-called deep learning drew attention when Google’s AlphaGo software, which uses that technology, beat one of the world’s top go players earlier this year. The focus in the U.S. is now on the next phase: how to apply deep learning in the service sector. The government is actively backing the efforts with planned spending of more than $200 million on related research projects over five years. Even Japanese companies are choosing to set up AI research bases in the U.S. Toyota Motor and Recruit Holdings have opened labs in Silicon Valley, while e-commerce giant Rakuten has a center in Boston.
