Introduction The human microbiome constitutes the whole set of microbial organisms associated with the human host. It has been shown to be crucial for human health and for the development and maintenance of the immune system and for several metabolic activities [1–3]. Significant effort has been devoted to its characterization in healthy individuals and subjects with a variety of diseases such as inflammatory bowel diseases [4,5], obesity [6,7], and type-2 diabetes [8]. Consequently, the potential use of the microbiome as a diagnostic tool is a promising line of investigation [9].
