MIT Engineers Program Beer-Delivering Robots

BOSTON (CBS) – Raise a glass for this creation.

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory programmed two robots that can deliver beverages.

Both small PR2 robots that have coolers attached to them are programmed to go to separate rooms and ask people if they want a drink.

If the person says yes, the “bartender” wheels over to a larger robot that places a beer in the cooler.

“This work tries to post the problem in a more general framework that given what we call macro actions you could use the planner that we have to go out and solve a problem,” MIT’s Ariel Anders explains in a YouTube video demonstrating how the robots work.

MIT’s creation is considered groundbreaking, and not just for thirsty bar patrons. Engineers hope to eventually use the robot technology for more crucial missions.

According to Popular Science, the creators hope to one day use the robots at emergency shelters to take orders for bottles and crackers.
