NEC to double staff involved with artificial intelligence

TOKYO — NEC announced plans Wednesday to double the size of its workforce focused on artificial intelligence to around 1,000 over the next five years.      The Japanese company will redeploy existing staff and also bring aboard new hires in India, with its rich vein of science-trained people, and in Singapore, where researchers from around the world have gone to work.      By boosting its workforce of AI-related researchers, system developers and consultants, NEC aims to double its AI-related sales to some 60 billion yen ($484 million) by fiscal 2020.      NEC is not the only information technology company in Japan acting to bolster its AI capabilities.
