For those who are petrified about a robot takeover, you can breathe a little easier. I don’t think it’s going to happen for awhile. This past week, K-5, an egg-shaped robot along the lines of R2-D2, was supposed to be guarding a retail center in the Georgetown section of Washington, D.C. It ended up dead. According to The New York Times, the K5 “is equipped with, among other things, thermal imaging, automatic license plate recognition and a video camera. Knightscope, the California-based maker of the robot, said its machines can be ‘an additional set of intelligent eyes and ears’ for security and law enforcement.” Instead, the robot cop stumbled down a set of steps and fell face first into a water fountain. K5 left behind a wife and two circuit boards. The company wasn’t sure what happened, but said it would send a replacement robot for free. Hopefully, it will see that the replacement robot stops by the YMCA first to take a swim class. The K5 has made news before.
