Reddit AMA: Stephen Hawking talks artificial intelligence

The users will have exactly 9 days to inquire about anything on Reddit AMA with Mr. Hawking. But for Hawking’s AMA, users will present the questions ahead of time, and he will answer them over the following weeks.

It’s a way to let the 73-year-old Hawking – who was diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) when he was 21 – take his time answering questions. This question and answer is also a part of Wired and Nokia’s #MakeTechHuman initiatives, which is to start discussions that will inevitably benefit mankind. Reports say Hawking wants to focus the AMA on discussions around artificial intelligence, although likely the questions will vary dramatically – in both substance and tone – as they tend to on Reddit. Hawking is also reportedly tempted to discuss his fears with artificial intelligence, which he states as, “potentially our greatest mistake in history”.

Stuart C. Wilson/Getty Images Hawking recently teamed up with Russian billionaire Yuri Milner, left, on a search for extraterrestrial life. All queries will be voted upon by the Reddit community, with those receiving the most upvotes scoring some screen time with the AMA moderators.

Previous Reddit AMAs have included a wide range of famous and controversial figures, including Julian Assange, Rev. Jesse Jackson and President Barack Obama. Hawking will get the chance to respond at his own pace, and his answers will appear over the next week weeks on the site. But the arena is different from other AMA guests in that Hawking will not be taking questions for a set amount of hours, rather, he will be taking questions over a period of more than a week.

What do you think of the Stephen Hawking Reddit AMA? Hawking said that he will be looking forward in receiving questions regarding Artificial Intelligence, like driverless cars, autonomous weapons and space drones. To him, as we make our growth and radical strides towards improving technology, it’s important that we remember why we do so: to improve humanity and our condition.
