Report: Google’s Echo Competitor Inches Closer to Reality

Amazon Echo’s strength is its speech recognition, something Google excels at, too. A Google rival to Amazon’s Echo home automation assistant is reportedly in the works, according to Recode. The device, code-named Chirp, would be a portable speaker with voice assistant technology to complement Google’s other connected home offerings, including the OnHub smart router. Citing sources within the company, Recode said that Chirp could be unveiled by the end of the year, though probably not at Google’s I/O developer conference next week in San Mateo, Calif. This is the second time in less than two months that rumors of a Google competitor to Echo have surfaced.
