Rothwell, Patrick, Ph.D.

I currently conduct neuroscience research at Stanford University, working jointly in the labs of Dr. Robert Malenka and Dr. Thomas Sudhof. I study how synaptic transmission within anatomically and genetically defined neural circuits leads to behavioral output, with a specific focus on the striatum (caudate-putamen and nucleus accumbens). In addition to the basic function of striatal circuitry, I am interested in how these circuits are perturbed in neuropsychiatric disorders like drug addiction and autism spectrum disorders. I address these questions using a variety of behavioral assays in genetically modified mice, combined with optogenetic and molecular genetic circuit manipulations, as well as eletrophysiological assesment of synaptic function in acute brain slice preparations.
