Cerebrovascular disease is the leading cause of disability in adults and there is no effective treatment to avoid stroke damages after the first hours. Various types of engineered biomaterial matrices, which in combination with stem cells, have shown promises for brain tissue replacement and reduce post-stroke disability. Hydrogels are tree-dimensional cross-linked networks of water-soluble polymers. Hydrogel polymers can be engineered in a variety of physical forms. They have excellent nutrient and oxygen permeability, allowing cell survival in the scaffold. The advantage of this kind of biomaterial is injectable.
