In the DPD intro paper narrow AI is compared to a tachometer. A finely tuned instrument that can replicate a human task (count spins) automatically, accurately and can give you a number. However, the tachometer has no idea what that number means. Is a tachometer AI? Of course not. But if it’s not, is narrow AI, such as computer vision, NLP, OCR and supervised learning not so much AI either, but really sophisticated sensing techniques?
