Tech titans pledge bn for AI research

Tesla Motors chief executive officer Elon Musk and other prominent tech executives are pouring US$1 billion into a non-profit aimed at creating artificial intelligence that augments humans’ capabilities, rather than making them obsolete. The company – called OpenAI – was announced on Friday, US time. OpenAI’s mission is “to advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return”. He will be co-chair of the non-profit with venture capitalist Sam Altman, who has backed Reddit. Among the financial backers of OpenAI are Peter Thiel, Reid Hoffman and Elon Musk (a trio of online payment entrepreneurs collectively known as “The PayPal Mafia”), among other notable private individuals, as well as support from Amazon’s cloud-computing arm Amazon Web…
