The Fred Korematsu story; machine learning on the march
New releases “Enduring Conviction: Fred Korematsu and His Quest For Justice” by Lorraine K. Bannai (University of Washington Press, $34.95). Korematsu refused to go when Japanese Americans were incarcerated at internment camps during World War II. He was eventually convicted and sent to a camp in Utah. He appealed to the Supreme Court but lost. Forty years later, attorneys resurrected and won his case, paving the way for redress. Bannai was on that team and today is director of the Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality at the Seattle University School of Law. “The Master Algorithm” by Pedro Domingos (Basic Books, $29.99).
