Uptake fellowships will bring data-science expertise to nonprofits

Data scientists at Uptake, the Chicago startup doing predictive analytics for big industry, are aiming to make a difference by applying their skills to social issues. Uptake was launched by Brad Keywell ⇒, who co-founded Groupon and venture-capital firm Lightbank and started Chicago Ideas Week. Uptake, which employs 650, has been valued at more than $1 billion.  On Thursday, the company opened applications for the first Beyond.Uptake fellowship program, which will connect eight people working at nonprofits and in government to data science mentors at Uptake.  Andrew Means, who previously co-founded the issues-focused data science consultancy Impact Lab in Chicago, joined Uptake in July to lead its philanthropy and civic innovation work. The fellowship is one of Beyond.Uptake’s first efforts. It is open to data scientists, analysts and other leaders at nonprofits, social enterprises or foundations…
