Woodside expands IBM Watson artificial intelligence as tech takes centre stage

Woodside’s Shaun Gregory says the company will expand its use of IBM’s Watson supercomputer. Aaron Bunch Woodside Petroleum has expanded its use of IBM’s Watson cognitive computing, which learns on the job, and upped its focus on digital initiatives as it seeks to drive more value out of systems across its sprawling operations. The company had its ratings outlooks downgraded to Negative by Fitch Ratings on Monday, as concerns rise about ever-falling oil prices, and it is now increasingly looking to digital technology solutions to increase efficiencies, cut costs and drive new commercial ideas. Woodside’s senior vice-president strategy, science and technology, Shaun Gregory, told The Australian Financial Review that IBM’s high-profile Watson supercomputer was one such area, which was surpassing expectations in terms of improving how the company could operate.…
