Abstract – It’s not really clear what “data science” is precisely meant to be, or how to be good at it. But great data scientists certainly have some combination of domain knowledge, data-cleaning expertise, solid grounding in analytical techniques, and the ability to explain complicated ideas to people with backgrounds very different from themselves. This talk will describe two pilot programs at Duke that help foster vibrant communities of young data scientists. Both programs draw inspiration, and funding, from practically every school at the university, as well as from the medical center. The Data+ Program is a 10-week summer experience where graduate students mentor undergraduate teams that attack cross-disciplinary data science challenges set by university faculty or industry or community groups.
