Wuest Column: Close gap between knowing and doing

Why is it that we know so many things and yet we continue to act as though we do not know them at all? I learned about erosion more than half a century ago, in Girl Scouts. We all read about the Dust Bowl years in high school history. We all know what problems result from clear cutting stream banks and fencerows. And yet someone has shaved the banks of the Baraboo River near the “new” bridge in Reedsburg, leaving soil to be washed off the land and into the river. Sadly, this time of year we see the senseless removal of trees and shrubs from along the roadsides and the edges of fields. With each cutting, we lose habitat for game birds and animals, food plants for butterflies, and…
