Big data and the ‘never-ending clinical trial’

I would like to compliment the Tribune for the article, “Data mining for deadly drug combinations,” which highlights the excellent work by Nick Tatonetti and demonstrates how data science is changing our approach to health care. However, the article may give some readers the impression that Chicago is behind in similar research. Quite the opposite is true. Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine established the Center for Data Science and Informatics in order to accelerate such research. The Columbia patient data archive is not the largest of its kind. The Northwestern Medicine Enterprise Data Warehouse is actually twice the size of the Columbia archive, with 8.3 million patients, 44 million prescriptions and 530 million lab results.
