Four Boulder companies banking on highly intelligent products that mimic the human approach

In Man vs. Machine, we are beginning to find out who will win. It’s probably man…or woman, but only by a hair. Artificial intelligence and machine learning are transforming multiple industries. And four startups in Boulder’s tech hub, working on anti-loss trackers, data-analyzing cameras, intelligent pot plants, and lifelike toys, are staking millions of dollars on their ability to adopt the way machines function for, or with, human beings. Experts define artificial intelligence as the concept of machines carrying out tasks and thinking the way that a human would. “Machine learning is a statistical analysis that powers artificial intelligence,” said Whit Andrews, an analyst at the Gartner Group, a Stamford, Conn.-based market research firm. “When people think about AI, what seems to be universal is the use of computing resources to do things that previously we thought only humans could do and to do it in a way that often seems to almost be human like.” According to Gartner in the first quarter of 2016 there were 140 AI startups, double the number in 2011.
