Hot Chips: Machine Learning Takes Center Stage.
The hottest topic in computing these days is machine learning, and that’s certainly visible on the hardware side. In recent weeks, we’ve heard a lot about new chips designed for deep learning, from Nvidia’s Tesla P100 and Drive PX 2 to Google’s Tensor Processing Units to Intel’s Xeon Phi. So, it’s not surprising that at the Hot Chips conference last week we heard from a number of different companies with some very different approaches to design tailored to machine learning and vision processing. Perhaps the biggest news was Nvidia’s disclosure of more detail on its Parker chip, used in its Drive PX 2 module for self-driving cars and aimed at deep learning for autonomous machines.
