MIT’s ‘Nightmare Machine’ transforms photos into creepy images
Comments Print You no longer need to step into a haunted house, or watch a cinematic thriller, to conjure up a good scare. As a treat leading up to Halloween, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Media Lab launched the “Nightmare Machine,” a project that uses deep-learning algorithms — or artificial intelligence — to generate “zombified” portraits of people, and transform pictures of recognizable landscapes into haunting imagery. Manuel Cebrian, a principal research scientist at CSIRO’s Data61, in Australia, and one of the project’s creators, said the Nightmare Machine follows in the tradition of other MIT “hacks,” or pranks, that the school is known for.
