The science of storytelling: Area author, neuroscience writer to speak in Winona
After building a 25-year career in neurologically based communication disorders, Penny Duffy now balances writing in the neurosciences for Mayo Clinic in Rochester with creative writing. “The Cartographer of No Man’s Land,” her debut novel, tells the story of a father at war during World War I and a son coming-of-age at home without him. Duffy, who will read from her book Tuesday at The Book Shelf in Winona as part of the Laureate Reading Series, finds inspiration from her unique childhood. She was born in central China during the Communist revolution, and grew up in New England and Maryland. She spent 35 summers sailing in Nova Scotia with her family, where “The Cartographer of No Man’s Land” takes place, and where her family roots go back to the 1750s.…
