UN Group to Consider Preemptive Ban on ‘Killer Robots’

(United Nations)(CNSNews.com) — Representatives of 89 nations attending the United Nations Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons’ (CCW) Fifth Review Conference in Geneva earlier this month have agreed to begin talks on instituting a preemptive ban on lethal autonomous weapons – also known as “killer robots”.Killer robots are weaponized machines that would potentially use artificial intelligence (AI) to strike targets without real-time human intervention.The conference, which was chaired by Pakistani Ambassador Tehmina Janjua, agreed to formalize the process by which killer robots can be universally banned before they are developed and deployed.As of December 13th, 19 nations have called for such a ban, according to the Campaign to Stop Killer Robots.
